The FULL Download

SOLIDWORKS 2017 SP0 was just made available for download and this is an excellent time to discuss your installation, upgrade and other CAD administrative practices.

Disks will be sent out soon, but why wait? You can download the new version NOW! I often hear about customers waiting until Service Pack 2 or later to upgrade. At the same time I also see customers running the service pack that was included on the disk even though a later service pack is available.

You all have your choices, but let me make some recommendations when it comes time to acquire the installation files. Overall, doing this “FULL Download” method gives you the following advantages:

  • Have immediate access to the installation files you’re entitled to now and into the future.
  • Do the download only once in your company, optimizing your installation and upgrade experience.
  • Avoid installation issues (including uninstall activities) often caused by partial or incremental upgrades.

Don’t wait for a disk.

This applies to all service packs. Go to http://customerportal.solidworks.com/, log in and click Downloads and Updates.

Click on “SOLIDWORKS Products” for the desired version and service pack.

Accept that End User License Agreement

On the Download and Install page, skip Step 1 and click “Download” under Step 2.

This will prompt to download “SolidWorksSetup.exe”

This is a self-extracting zip file, so once it is downloaded, double click it to open.

Click “Browse” to specify your desired destination. If you don’t have one already, I recommend creating an organized archive for these downloads. Inside, we’ll use a folder with the version and service pack number in the name.

Click “Unzip” and the SOLIDWORKS Installation Manager will open if the option to open sldim.exe was checked. Otherwise, run setup.exe from the destination folder after the unzip completes.

Do a FULL Download.

When you open the Installation Manager, choose the “Download and Share all files” option. Click Next.

Enter your serial number if necessary. If you already have SOLIDWORKS installed on the computer performing the download, this step is skipped.

Address any errors or warnings in the System Check section.

In the Summary section, double check your Download Options. Change the “Download to” path if necessary. Typically, you can leave the option options at their defaults.

Check “I accept the terms of the SOLIDWORKS License Agreement” and click “Download Now.”

Now you’re off and running. Depending on the speed of your internet connection, this can take some time.

.

Once the download is complete, browse to the destination folder specified earlier to run setup.exe to get your next installation steps started.
