BSU’s College of Engineering Hosts ‘MythBusters’

Ever wonder how hard it actually is to find a needle in a haystack? Or maybe you’ve always wondered if talking to your plants really makes them grow faster? Since MythBusters first appeared on the Discovery Channel in 2003 the show has answered those questions and hundreds of other myths, urban legends and tall tales.

This television show has gained the attention of millions of households tuning in each week to see which urban myths experts Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman will prove real or fiction. Residents will be able to see a free presentation by the ‘MythBusters’ at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 25 in the Taco Bell Arena at Boise State University. The College of Engineering at Boise State University as well as several corporate sponsors will be presenting this event as part of National Engineers Week.

Behind the scenes of the television show, Savage and Hyneman use SolidWorks and COSMOSWorks in order to build and test the equipment and props used on the show. “SolidWorks and COSMOS put some serious engineering chops at our fingertips, and someday they are going to keep us from kissing our butts goodbye,” says Hyneman. The Celebrity pair uses SolidWorks and COSMOS to analyze the problematic situations seen on the show.

This family friendly event is a great opportunity for anyone wanting to see the ‘MythBusters’ in action. The presentation will include a lecture by Savage and Hyneman followed by a “bloopers” video from the show and ending with a question and answer session. Although this is a free event, you must have a ticket in order to attend. The tickets will be available beginning Feb. 1st in three locations:  Taco Bell Arena box office, Boise State University Student Union Building Information Desk, and the BSU West Student Services office, room 107.
